The Flightstuff Blog will contain updated info on flying in our area. I can post to it from my cell phone, and can update it from flying sites.

Over the winter and spring, I've finished a couple of projects that I've been meaning to get around to for a while. I've made myself an instrument pod for not very much money and far less work than I expected it to be. It turned out pretty good, considering it cost very little to build. For more pics of it, and a brief description of how I made it, visit the Flightstuff Instrument Pod page. Below is a pic of it.

Another project that I've completed is a lightweight camera mount. I fly with a high def video camera on practically every flight I make. Sometimes, I mount the cam somewhere on the glider to take the conventional type of hang gliding videos that we've had for years. However, my favorite way to fly with a video camera is to have it mounted on the base tube where I can pan it around, turn it on and off, even zoom in, while flying.

For the last couple of years, I've been using the head from a fluid head tripod, combined with some other hardware, as a base bar mount. It works great - very smooth panning with it, since that's what a fluid head tripod is designed for. Unfortunately, it is really heavy. In an effort to lighten the load, I built a new camera mount that is much lighter. I'm sure it won't pan as smoothly as the fluid head did, but it swivels around pretty nicely. Here's a pic.

Please take a moment to check out The Cloudbase Foundation. The CloudBase Foundation was formed by a group of Hang Glider and Paraglider pilots to support children in the United States and around the world. This is an extremely worthy cause, and offers a chance to help children have a better life.

Just put up a few pics from our days in Nevada and New Mexico in a Facebook Gallery. These are all from 10 - 15 years ago.

Just wanted to post a link to a video by Jonathan Dietch (NMERider on HG.org). Jon used two GoPro HD cameras to capture a 180 degree panoramic view from the keel of his T2C. This is a great idea! I like this concept so well that I may try it in the upcoming flying season. Good job, Jon! Here's the link to the video at Youtube and Vimeo -

Here's a link to a page containing some tracklogs from the 2009 flying season. They are in .kmz format, so if you have Google Earth installed, you should be able to click on the individual links and Google Earth should launch and display the track.
They show some of the local routes and can be used to see locations of landing fields and other info that new or visiting pilots might want to check out.

The AETN (Arkansas Educational Televison Network) Hang Gliding segment is now available on the internet. It should air on television on December 7th at 6:30 PM CST. It is available right now by going to either of the following links -

This is the video at the AETN Website

This is the video on Youtube

The pilots interviewed in this video are Donna (my wife), Mark Stump (Atos VQ pilot and XC record holder in Arkansas), and myself.

Thanks to Chuck Dovish and AETN for producing a very good and very positive segment on Hang Gliding!

A look at hang gliding in Arkansas will air on AETN (Arkansas Educational Television Network) on Dec. 7, 2009. It will be part of the Exploring Arkansas show, hosted by Chuck Dovish. Chuck does a really good job with the material he puts in this show, and I'll try to get a copy of it up on this site for all to watch.

A new video is uploaded on Youtube and Vimeo, called Hang Gliding - Airtime. It's about 4 minutes worth of air to air shots, filmed in 2009. This is the Vimeo Version, and this is the Youtube version.

Over the last year or so, I've had problems finding decent music to use with flying videos, and have uploaded videos to Youtube lately with music that I thought was copyright free, only to be notified by Youtube that I was infringing on a copyright. The only reasonable answer that I could come up with was to learn to create my own soundtrack music. Hang Gliding - Airtime has a soundtrack that I created myself, using software. I'm no musician, but I know what I like, and with the right software, I am finding that I can conjure up some soundtrack music that works okay. I'll continue to try to improve my music making ability, and it's my intention that all videos I create from now on will use music that I have created myself.

09/12/09 -Check the video page for the newest video, "Fall Flight". This is a video I shot in the fall of 2008 at Magazine, as the trees were at the peak of their color change. It has some beautiful scenery.

09/11/09 The Magazine fly-in-reunion, on September 5th, was a great time, with many pilots showing up and lots of great food at the cookout. Mrs. Albright was able to attend, and it was very good to see her. She's looking great! I personally had not seen her in around 18 years, since Donna and I left Arkansas and moved out west in 1991. Mark Stump introduced her to any who had not met her before, and made the comment that she started allowing hang glider pilots to land in her backyard when she was 58 years old. She is 94 now. That's 36 years of using Albright's field as the primary LZ for Magazine Mountain. Amazing.
